What Is a Demineralization Plant?

A Demineralization Plant is a water treatment system that strips water of its mineral salts — such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate, and nitrate — using ion exchange resins. The process produces demineralized water with extremely low dissolved solids and conductivity, suitable for sensitive applications where standard treated water cannot meet quality requirements.

Working Principle

VPPL’s DM Plants operate on the ion exchange process, typically using two main stages:

  1. Cation Exchange UnitRemoves positively charged ions (cations) like calcium, magnesium, and sodium by replacing them with hydrogen ions.
  2. Anion Exchange UnitRemoves negatively charged ions (anions) like chloride, sulfate, and nitrate by replacing them with hydroxyl ions.
  3. Mixed Bed (Optional Polishing)Combines cation and anion resins to achieve ultra-high purity water when required.

During treatment, hydrogen (H⁺) and hydroxyl (OH⁻) ions recombine to form pure water (H₂O), leaving virtually all dissolved minerals behind.
